30 Years of Legend of the Five Rings Episode 6

An Interview with Luke Peterschmidt

“30 Years of Legend of the Five Rings” is the second series of the Play to Win podcast from Aconyte Books. This series of interviews celebrates 30 years since the debut of L5R at Gen Con 1995, and explores the perspectives of the people who had a hand in the franchise’s making, past and present; the lasting impacts L5R had on their lives; and what about L5R has made it an enduring force in the tabletop games industry after all these years.

In Episode 6, host Katrina Ostrander talks to game designer and tabletop industry veteran Luke Peterschmidt. He was the brand manager for L5R for part of the Wizards of the Coast era, and he also served as the head of Office Dog Games, the studio responsible for the critically acclaimed L5R board game River of Gold. We chat about the reinvention of L5R around the time it was sold to Wizards, the importance of “renegade storytelling,” a crazy pitch for an L5R MMO, and some lessons Luke took from L5R that any game designer or storyteller can take to heart.
