30 Years of Legend of the Five Rings Episode 4
An Interview with Steve Horvath
“30 Years of Legend of the Five Rings,” the second series of the Play to Win podcast from Aconyte Books, continues. This series of interviews celebrates 30 years since the debut of L5R at Gen Con 1995, and explores the perspectives of the people who had a hand in the franchise’s making, past and present; the lasting impacts L5R had on their lives; and what about L5R has made it an enduring force in the tabletop games industry after all these years.
In Episode 4, host Katrina Ostrander is joined by Steve Horvath. He’s been involved with Legend of the Five Rings for its entire history, from before the game’s official launch to his retirement from Asmodee in late 2024. Our conversation begins in the 90s and continues to the 2000s, when the brand started to face challenges brought on by its own success, and onward, to the sale of the brand to Fantasy Flight Games. We also look at the franchise’s present and its future, and Steve shares some of his favorite recent releases, as well as how much he is looking forward to the release of Champions of Rokugan.
